How We Bring Fiber Internet to Your Community

We’re actively working to expand fast, reliable fiber internet to homes and businesses across our service area. Bringing fiber to rural and coastal communities takes time, planning, and coordination—but we’re committed every step of the way.

Here’s what you can expect as we build your network:

We know you’re excited about getting fiber to your home or business—and we’re just as excited. Before construction begins, projects must go through a detailed planning, funding, and approval process.

Many of our fiber builds are supported by state and federal grants, including funding through the Rural Utilities Service (RUS). Securing this funding, and meeting all requirements, can take time, and each phase of the project must be reviewed and approved by the funding agency before moving forward.

While this process can extend timelines, it allows us to bring fiber service to areas that might not otherwise have access and ensures the network is built to last.

Once funding is approved and plans are finalized, we move forward into engineering and construction.

You may see Pioneer Connect crews in your area gathering information and mapping out the network.

This step helps us design the most efficient and reliable fiber route while identifying any potential challenges ahead of construction.

Before any digging begins, existing utilities are carefully located and marked.

You’ll see flags or temporary paint in yards, along roads, and near sidewalks. These markers help ensure we avoid water, power, gas, and other underground lines during construction.

Please note that the paint used is temporary and will fade over time.

Let construction begin! Once preparation is complete, construction crews begin building the main fiber network that runs through the area.

Depending on the location, fiber may be installed underground or placed on existing utility poles. During this phase, you may notice construction crews, equipment, and occasional temporary disruptions such as limited parking or minor traffic adjustments.

We work hard to minimize impacts and keep construction moving as efficiently as possible.

After the mainline fiber is in place, the next step is bringing fiber directly to individual homes and businesses; this is called a “fiber drop.”

This involves running fiber from the mainline network to each service location, typically by digging or plowing an underground path to the home or business.

Our goal is to leave your property and neighborhood as close as possible to its original condition. If you have any concerns, our team is here to help.

This phase is scheduled after mainline construction is complete, and we’ll communicate with customers when their specific connection is ready.

Once the main network is complete, we begin connecting homes and businesses so you can start enjoying fast, reliable internet.

When service becomes available in your area, you’ll be able to sign up. Our team will schedule your installation and get everything ready to activate your fiber connection.

Because your fiber drop is already in place, this step often moves quickly. Our technicians will splice the fiber to ensure a strong, reliable connection and install an Optical Network Terminal (ONT)—the device that brings fiber internet into your home or business.

In some cases, especially if we weren’t able to schedule your fiber drop during construction, additional preparation may be needed before installation. This can extend the timeline, and in those situations, it may take up to approximately 14 days to complete your connection.

Before we wrap up, we’ll test everything to make sure your service is running smoothly—so you’re ready to stream, work, game, and connect at fiber-fast speeds from day one.

We understand how frustrating it can be to wait for fiber service, especially when you’re ready for better connectivity. Building fiber in rural areas takes time because there are several important steps involved, including funding approvals, engineering, permitting, and construction. Many of these projects are supported by government grants, which come with strict requirements and timelines that are outside of our control.

While those processes can slow things down, they’re in place to ensure the network is built right and will serve the community for years to come. Please know that our team at Pioneer is actively working to move each phase forward as quickly as possible, and we’re committed to bringing service to your area as soon as we can.
