Robocall Blocking helps to automatically prevent unwanted robocalls so they won’t reach your phone.

What is robocalling?

A robocall is a call originated by a computerized autodialer that plays a pre-recorded message to the called party if or when they answer. Although companies may use autodialers to initiate a call, they only connecting to a bank of waiting agentsif or when you answer the call. The Robocall Blocking Service is designed to block the majority of all these types of unwanted calls.

What types of calls are blocked?

Robocall Blocking prevents both unwanted calls (such as political campaigns, advertising, charities) as well as fraudulent calls (such as IRS or Windows Support scams).

How does it work?

Unlike other features that only reject calls from a specific set of callers that you select, Robocall Blocking validates the calling number against huge national databases of unwanted callers. Those databases change dynamically, with new numbers being added constantly. This allows you continue blocking unwanted calls without adding new numbers to a list yourself.

Are all unwanted calls blocked?

Robocall Blocking does not guarantee to block 100% of unwanted calls, but it will significantly reduce the number of robocalls that manage to get through.

Will it block all calls I do want to receive?

Robocall Blocking uses highly intelligent algorithms to determine what calls to block. In particular, it is carefully designed not to block calls from high volume callers that you still need to receive, such as mass announcements from schools to announce snow closures, or from hospitals to confirm appointments.

What happens when a call is blocked?

If a call is rejected, a short rejection announcement is played to the caller, “We’re sorry. The party you have dialed is not accepting calls at this time.” If you also have Voicemail, the caller will then be sent to your Voicemail. This is a precaution in the unlikely event a genuine caller has been misidentified as unwanted. The caller will have the opportunity to leave a message. In a typical case of an automated robocall, no message will be left.

How can I sign up?

There are two easy ways to sign up. You can contact a customer service representative, or sign into your online bill pay account and initiate the service there.
